Executive director of Affirmation
Excommunicated in 1986 and legally married to his husband since 2008, Gustav-Wrathall has attended his Minneapolis ward for years as a believing but excommunicated Latter-day Saint. He led Affirmation through the November 2015 policy and reported that a membership survey found the share of Affirmation members active in the Church fell from over half before the policy to roughly twenty to twenty-five percent after it.

Excommunication as ordinary practice
John Gustav-Wrathall, later executive director of Affirmation, was excommunicated in 1986. He writes that in the 1970s and 1980s the handbook was written so that a member could be excommunicated simply for being known to have a sexual orientation other than heterosexual, and that even after the Church clarified that being gay was not itself grounds for discipline, disproportionate numbers of gay men and lesbians were still cut off.
